Barrelhouse is an independent non-profit literary organization. We are not affiliated with a university or writing program.

Barrelhouse is produced by writers for readers who are looking for quality writing with an edge and a sense of humor.

Barrelhouse bridges the gap between serious art and pop culture.

Barrelhouse is a biannual print journal featuring fiction, poetry, interviews, and essays about music, art, and the detritus of popular culture.

Barrelhouse is a web site that regularly posts new short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, book reviews, and other literary things.

Barrelhouse is a small press that puts out roughly two books a year.

Barrelhouse editors (Tom McAllister and Mike Ingram) produce Book Fight, a weekly podcast about books and writing.

Stories originally published in Barrelhouse have been featured in the Best American Nonrequired Reading, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, and the Million Writer’s Award.

Barrelhouse supports the indie lit community through major events like the Conversations and Connections Conference and the writer's retreat Writer Camp.

Barrelhouse offers 8-week online workshops where writers get the straight dope on their work.

Barrelhouse has been recognized by the mainstream media, including but not limited to such outlets as the Washington Post, DCist.com, The Urbanite, NewPages.com, and Washington City Paper.

Barrelhouse wants to be your weird Internet friend. You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all the latest jibber jabber from Barrelhouse, our contributors, and the indie lit scene.

HOW OUR THING WORKS: WHO DOES WHAT

In the interest of transparency, here’s a quick summary of how things generally work at Barrelhouse. First of all, we’re all volunteers. None of us gets anything other than a few bar tabs paid for by Barrelhouse. We’re not complaining! The whole thing was our idea in the first place, so it’s our responsibility to keep it going if it is indeed going to keep going.

For the print magazine, our super awesome Assistant Editors serve as the first readers for fiction and poetry, and pass work on to the fiction and poetry editors for final decisions about what we’ll eventually publish. For this website, Katharine Coldiron organizes and runs the book review part of our blog. In the world of printing books and chapbooks, Mike Ingram and Lilly Dancyger manage fiction and nonfiction books, and Dan Brady is in charge of poetry books. Dan and Tony Mancus run our chapbook operation.

Everybody else on the masthead s essentially a co-owner of Barrelhouse, a member of the loose collective that thinks up new ways to (a) continue to exist, and (b) get awesome writing out into the world through our magazine, website, and press, and (c) make good things happen for writers and the writing community through things like the Barrelhouse Amplifier, the Conversations and Connections writer’s conferences (in DC in the Spring and Pittsburgh in the Fall), the Writer Camp writer’s retreat, and whatever comes next.
